Aluminum: Too Common and Apparent to Overlook!

An interesting investment idea is hidden in the periodic table under the lucky number 13.

Green investments will require a variety of resources, not least aluminum. All over the world (and even in Russia) they are seriously talking about the development of new types of energy and transport, which means that someone will rip the fruit at the end of the day. Guessing who is a chance to make a good long-term investment. In recent reports, analysts from Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan agree that of all the non-ferrous metals, the demand for which will grow in the coming years, the most attention should be paid by a wide margin not to cobalt, not even lithium and not, unlike one may guess, copper, but the most common aluminum. Despite a year of price growth, JP Morgan predicts a further price increase to $3.5 thousand per ton.

The structural deficit of aluminum is higher than that of other metals: in the current price realities, it is used and will be used to replace part of the demand for copper. In addition to traditional demand drivers such as solar panel mounts and long-distance power cables, we should not overlook the design of new electric vehicles for aluminum wiring in an effort to reduce the weight of their structures. Prices for many resources, including aluminum, are forming roughly three centers: the US, the EU and China. In all three, the potential for post-Covid economic recovery is looking promising, and demand is fueled by replenishment of stocks, but these processes entail the introduction of new production capacities. At the same time, the long-term demand for metals (in particular, for aluminum) will indeed grow along with an increase in the share of renewable energy and electric vehicles.

More than 20 countries (including China, India, some of the largest EU countries and 12 U.S. states) are going to ban the sale of cars with gasoline and diesel engines over the next 10-20 years. Electric vehicles are an important potential source of demand for aluminum, not only because of the wiring, but also because of the battery cells themselves. Aluminum is used in the materials of some types of batteries (along with the aforementioned nickel, cobalt and manganese), but the bulk is found in body parts and numerous power and signal cables.
